Duration of Placement: 4 Months (May 1, 2026 – August 30, 2026)
Background and General Scope of Position:
Reporting to the Development Manager, the Development Intern is an opportunity for a post-secondary student to participate meaningfully in the future evolution of Calgary’s Rivers District and Transit-Oriented Communities. The Development Intern will be responsible for assisting Development Managers and the Director of Design with day-to-day responsibilities required to complete planning approvals, urban design and master planning, infrastructure, open space, and large-scale built form development projects across CMLC’s existing and future land portfolio. The successful applicant must have a strong eye for good design and must be passionate about human-centred placemaking.
Key Accountabilities / Deliverables:
Conducting research and completing recommendations on best practices in city building, design, and placemaking as it relates to public infrastructure (streets, parks, plazas, etc.), and urban design and land use plans
Creating planning and urban design assets, images, and correspondence, such as 3D digital models, massing studies, PowerPoint presentations, infographics, and visualizations that convey complicated information in a concise, easily understandable format, tied to best practices/precedents of other city-building projects
Completing various development research exercises relating to land analysis, urban design, streetscape design, parcel configurations, land use planning, and infrastructure
Reviewing and evaluating urban design and master planning documents as they relate to established guidelines and frameworks for complete communities
Assisting with procuring consultants to conduct site due diligence including land appraisals, geotechnical, environmental site assessments, site surveys, etc.
Reviewing consultant proposals and reports and preparing/amending contracts as required
Providing support as required to Development Managers and the Director of Design to assist with strategic projects and land strategies including project management plans, request for proposals, budgets, change orders, invoicing, and correspondence such as memos and PowerPoint presentations
Support with weekly site walks and public realm quality control reviews, ensuring that community infrastructure is maintained to a high standard.
Research best practices and design interventions that enhance community safety as required and directed.
